Work of Art: Social Media Plus

– To maintain an Etsy shop,
I mean, it takes a lot of time. I mean, I have five different shops,
because I love doing different things. – Etsy has been a really good resource for us, and I think it’s really great, because it lets you connect with people
outside of the community. You know, the World Wide Web is fantastic, because we can send something,
you know, to Germany if we wanted to, or we could have clients in Istanbul. – Just the other day, I sold a lace mask
to someone in New Zealand. – I find that tagging work
and using keyword searches draws an audience in
that is completely unfamiliar to me and my work. – It allows you to visually represent
what you’re–what you’ve created and talk about it and describe it
and let people buy it in the community–your local community
or the worldwide community. – I don’t only use Etsy as my platform
to sell my work. I go on Facebook. I even have a Pinterest site where people,
when they pin my work, I put my Etsy work there so when they pin it,
they’ll go right to my Etsy site, and then some of them will purchase from there. – And I’m discovering that Pinterest,
for the work that I make, is a really applicable format. The demographics of Pinterest are such
that I’m hitting my market, essentially. – You have to have discipline
when you’re on social media. You can get lost in, you know,
other people’s work, their world. But it’s very important that you find that balance of, you know, displaying your work
and sharing it with others, but in order to keep doing
what you love to do, you have to find a balance
and stop and then go back and create. – Social media can definitely be a time suck, but I find that I need five- to ten-minute breaks
throughout the course of my day, that it’s a part of the pacing
of my studio. What I often will do is set a timer for myself
or, you know, build in five-minute breaks in a way that I can
simultaneously accomplish something on the web and also just take a little studio break
from the work that I’m doing.
