UNH student arrested for vandalizing outdoor artwork

THESE SCULPTED FISTS OUTSIDE OF STOKE HALL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE ARE A SIGN OF SOLIDARITY FOR STUDENTS WHO FEEL TARGETED BY RACISM. POLICE SAY 19-YEAR-OLD SHAAN DEJONG DAMAGED THEM. THE STUDENT NOW CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL MISCHIEF.>>I THINK IT’S REALLY GREAT THAT THERE HAS BEEN AN ARREST. I THINK WE NEED TO MAKE EXAMPLES OUT OF THESE PEOPLE DOING THESE HATEFUL CRIMES. MIKE: THIS MONTH A SERIES OF , RACIALLY CHARGED ISSUES HAVE SPARKED CONCERN AT THE SCHOOL. MOST RECENTLY SWASTIKAS WERE , DRAWN ON THE WALL OF A RESIDENCE HALL, THE N-WORD WRITTEN ON A BULLETIN BOARD, AND A ROCK WAS THROWN AT A STUDENT OF COLOR. TODAY COMMUNITY MEMBERS, LAW ENFORCEMENT AND THE NAACP , DISCUSSED RACIAL ISSUES AT UNH. THE CONFERENCE WAS PRE-PLANNED NOT ORGANIZED IN RESPONSE TO , RECENT INCIDENTS.>>COME NEXT FALL, WE’RE GOING TO BE RIGHT BACK HERE TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO RESOLVE THIS AND THE UNIVERSITY NEEDS TO KNOW THAT. MIKE: ORGANIZERS ARE TRYING TO KEEP COMMUNICATION OPEN IN HOPES OF SOLVING AND PREVENTING FUTURE INCIDENTS.>>SO IF THERE ARE RESIDENTS HERE FROM THE TOWN OF DURHAM OR RESIDENTS FROM PORTSMOUTH OR CAMPUS RESIDENTS, WE WILL LEAVE HERE AND CONTINUE THESE CONVERSATIONS AND BUILD ON THEM.>>THIS IS GOOD TIMING TO KEEP TALKING AND IT’S JUST A REMINDER THAT WE HAVE TO KEEP THESE ISSUES IN FRONT OF US BECAUSE THEY’RE HAPPENING MORE THAN MANY OF US THINK. MIKE: DEJONG WAS RELEASED ON BAIL AND WILL BE IN COURT IN JULY.
