Transforming the puppets into real elephants | Circus 1903

What we’re doing is laying a pattern on the
top skin using fairy realistic elephant colours, browns, ochers, greys. Tracey really has been
trying to find a way of laying a pattern across the mesh that gives you a feeling of texture
that’s beyond what you’re already getting from the material. Below that, we’ve got another
range of colours that reference the same spectrum and then below that again, we start to introduce
colours that aren’t realistic at all. You don’t see those colours straight away, but
as the elephant starts to move, you start to feel that there’s something else going
on. And when we watch a puppet, we want that to be your experience. The first thing you
think of when you see it, is that’s an elephant. The second thing you think is, it’s a bit
magical.
