The Photos App iOS 8: Tracking down your pictures

In this lesson we’re going to explore some
of the features of the Photos App. In particular how to organize your photos, search for photos,
create and edit an album. Open the Photos App and let’s take a look how it works with
the features. At the moment, I’m in’ the Moments View. The ‘Moments View’ is just one picture
taken in one moment, and so you can scroll up and down on the right hand side and you’ll
see the dates that the pictures were taken. Go back up to the ‘Navigation’ and remember,
Navigation, on the iPad, is always up on the top left. I can go back to ‘Collections View’
and the Collections View is now just sort of summarising, or aggregating all the photos
from a given period of time. From the 12th of October to the 23rd of November, which
is the last set of photos, these are all the photos that were taken and it just gives you
a quicker way to go through all of your pictures, looking for a picture in a given period of
time. I keep going up and doing a quick scroll. Now I’m looking at 2013, so over a year ago,
and if I want to look at any of these pictures, I could simply tap them and open them  or
I can scrub along and look at the thumbnail views. I’m going to come to a picture that
I like. I can just let it go and it will open that picture into the actual picture and if
I want to go back to the Moments View, I can tap up the top to go left, back to Moments
View. At the bottom you can also see all the other pictures that were in this Moments View
and so I can scroll between them all and I can see the navigation bar moving at the bottom
there. If I go back to Moments View, you can see them all and when they were taken: the
11th of July 2013. Let’s go back to that menu. You can also see Places, so if you wanted
to see where you took those pictures… most of them were taken in Melbourne, but there
will be some other places. You can see in this one that some of them were taken in the
Crown Casino. If you tap the actual name of the place, it will actually open up a map
and it will show you that picture and how many pictures and where they were taken. Now
that only works if you’ve got your camera allowing your location to be broadcast. If
you want to check, tap the ‘Home’ button, go in ‘Settings’ to ‘Privacy and ‘Location
Services’, to ‘Camera’ and make sure that you’ve got ‘Allow Locations’ accessed while
using the app. If you’ve got ‘Never’, then the camera will not broadcast your location,
and you’ll never be able to find your photos. If you’re taking photos with your iPad while
you’re on holiday, then having the location makes good sense. So let’s go back to Photos.
If I go back even further and go back into the ‘Years View’. You can see in Thumbnail
View all of the photos that you took in a given year. If I were to find a picture that
I took in  2013, I wasn’t quite sure where it was but it might be towards the end of
the year. I can sort of put my finger on any of them and there I’ve got the thumbnail view
which I can scrub through looking for a picture. Drop it, let it go, looking for a picture
at a given time and then it opens up in the picture and then you can go back to Moments
View, back to Collections View and that’s basically the navigation of all your pictures.
You can also search for a photo as well. There is a search button there and you can search
by album, or you can search for a given time or maybe a title if you’ve renamed your pictures.
If I was looking for pictures that I took in July 2013, it’s going to give me that result.
35 pictures taken in July 2013. I can tap that and it will open up all those pictures.
Just cancel that search. When you do another search, then that search will be there as
a recent search. So it’s much easier to find groups of pictures, rather than trying to
work out, are they in the Years View, the Collections View, the Moments View, or whereabouts
they are. So try Search. The other thing you can do with pictures. You can turn them into
a Favourite. If I really wanted to keep this picture and I wanted to be able to find this
picture without having to scroll up and down using the Collections, Years, Moments View.
I can turn it into a favourite just by tapping the heart.  If I go back to Moments View,
there is an Albums View and in the Albums View, I can create albums of pictures that
I’ve  created myself but there is also a default album called ‘Favourites’. This one
here. Any picture that I’ve made a favourite would be stored here and you can see the picture
I’ve just put there. If I go into Select and tap that picture and trash it, then that picture
will be deleted from the Camera Roll. If you want to remove something from a favourite,
then go into the picture and tap the heart and that takes it out of the favourites, or
just put it in the trash. Now the other albums that you get as a default. If you use the
camera and you take a Panorama, then it will create a Panorama’s album. It gives you a
Camera Roll by default, so that’s sort of everything in there. If I tap the Camera Roll,
it’s every picture, every screen capture, everything I’ve taken in just one continuous
scrolling list. No organisation. Any videos that I take also are stored in there. PhotoStream.
If you turned on PhotoStream in iCloud, then any photo that I take on one Apple device
or a Windows device, if it’s running iCloud Control panel , will be stored in here. This
last picture, the two last pictures, were taken on a phone which has PhotoStream turned
on and that photo now appears on my iPad within seconds and it will also appear on any computer
that is running iCloud. You can have your last 1000 photos in your PhotoStream. Now
it also has a Videos album, so only videos that you take with your iPad’s camera will
go into your Videos album and then you have Recently Deleted. If I delete an image …let’s
go back to the Camera Roll. Let’s take that picture and trash it, so there’s a trash can
and I’m going to delete that photo and then go back to Albums and to Recently Deleted,
and there’s that picture and the pictures that are available in this album for 30 days
and once that 30 days is up, they’ll just start dropping off the album. if we go down
the bottom, the one at the end there has got four days left before it’s permanently deleted.
If you want to recover it, just tap it and Recover. Recover the photo and and it will
go back into its normal place. If you want to delete them, you can Select, you can go
into actual pictures and delete. You can do multiple deletions. You can do multiple recovery,
so I completely want to delete those and let them out, or you can just leave them in there
just in case you need them. Any albums that you created down at the bottom here, so all
these albums here are albums that I’ve created myself, by simply… I can do it in two ways.
I can tap the plus (+) and give the name of an album, so I just call it Test Album…
and save it and then it takes me straight into the Collections View where I can go through
and pick the pictures that I want to put in this album. I’m just picking anything, and
go up and down and as you pick them, you’ll see the blue tick and then you do ‘Done’.
That’s now created an album called Test Album. I go into that Test album and there’s all
the pictures in there. I can select the picture; I’m going to select one and trash it and it
will just be removed from the album but it stays in your photo library unlike the favourites.
I will move that one. If I want to put more photos in the album, so go back into the photos,
and if I’ve taken a few more photos, tap ‘Select’ and I want to put a few more in. I can Add
to the Album. The only albums I’m able to add to are the one’s that I’ve created. Not
the default albums. I can’t put anything into them, they’re greyed out. But I want to put
those pictures into my Test album, so you drop them in there. You go back and look at
the albums.Test Album and there’s more pictures in there. The other way you can create an
album is … by going into Photos, selecting multiple photos. I could select a few pictures
wherever I want and then go to Add To and it’s a New album I want, so when I go down
to the bottom there on the right, ‘New Album’, put those into a new album. Call it Test 2.
Save. Now it’s created. Go back to Albums and then I’ve got another album there, Test
2. To delete an album, an entire album, tap ‘Edit’ and you’ll see a cross (X) appear on
any album that can be deleted. If I tap that cross, I can now delete that album. The photos
will still be in the camera roll, just the album has disappeared. I’m going to tap Done.
If there’s any pictures in an album that you want to remove, it’s Select, select the picture
and  trash and that will remove it from the album but it will still be in the Photos App.
In the next video we’re going to look at how you share Photos and how you look at slide
shows and set up slideshows and how you delete photos
