Between my junior and senior years in college,
I took a course in invertebrate zoology and I discovered this whole new world that I didn’t
even know existed. I just, I just, fell in love with life in
the oceans. And I couldn’t get enough. Ocean science is really critical to our future.
The oceans play such a key role in the system that is Earth, the life that is on this planet. Ecosystem-based fishery management is simply
an acknowledgment that as we are thinking about how to manage fisheries sustainably,
we need to do that in light of all the interconnectedness between fishing and other things. We really need to be thinking about not just
individual species, but the other parts of the ecosystem, the habitat, the prey, the
competitors, the predators- all those pieces that interact. Healthy oceans are vital for healthy fisheries.
So we need to think about the whole as we manage the piece.
