Denver Art Museum Artwork Damaged, Suspect Arrested

THIS IS CBS4 NEWS AT NOON. THE DENVER ART MUSEUM IS ASSESSING THE DAMAGE AFTER ARE VISITOR ATTACKED THE ART IN A MUSEUM. I’M BRITT MORENO. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. THIS HAPPENED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON IN THE STAMPEDE ART GALLERY. TORI MASON IS LIVE AT THE MUSEUM COVERING THIS FOR US. ANY IDEA WHAT THE MOTIVATION IS BEHIND THE VANDALISM? Reporter: NO, AT THIS POINT THERE ARE NO MOTIVES FOR THIS CRIME. POLICE HAVE THE MAN THEY BELIEVE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CRIME. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME ANYTHING LIKE THIS HAS HAPPENED AT THE MUSEUM. THE 18-YEAR-OLD PAID ADMISSION BEFORE GOING UP STAIRS FOR THE STAMPEDE ANIMAL ART EXHIBIT. THEN HE PUSHED A GLASS STRUCTURE OVER CAUSING IT TO SHATTER. THEN HE MADE HIS WAY TO OTHER PAINTINGS. HE BEGAN SHATTERING OTHER OBJECTS INTO THE GROUND. 10 ITEMS WERE REPORTED DAMAGED OR DESTROYED. THE MUSEUM DID NOT SPECIFY THE MONETARY DAMAGE HERE BUT THE DIRECTOR BELIEVES TLA WILL BE ABLE — THEY WILL BE ABLE TO CONSERVE OR RESTORE WHAT WAS DAMAGED. THE MUSEUM STAFF HAD TO TACKLE THE MAN BEFORE HE COULD DO MORE DAMAGE. THERE WAS A LOT OF FORCE INVOLVED. IT WAS OBVIOUSLY A VERY ANGRY YOUNG MAN. THERE WAS A LOT OF FORCE IN TRYING TO PUSH THE VITRINES AROUND. THAT WAS NOT A THING THAT HAPPENED ACCIDENTALLY. THAT WAS CLEAR. Reporter: THE ART DIRECTOR WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE STAFF FOLLOWED THE CORRECT PROTOCOL FOR THE SITUATION. HE WAS ARRESTED FOR CRIMINAL MISCHIEF AND HE IS IN CUSTODY.
