Day Octopus – 3:17.5 (How to Art) – Nature Meets Paper


hi I’m Brandon I’m a marine biologist
and an artist and welcome to nature meets paper the place where we go on an

how I do my art I post every Tuesday and Saturday
Tuesday’s videos focus on the art and the procedures of how I did my paintings
and Saturday’s videos are all about the science of the animal today we are going
to be discovering how I painted the day octopus brushes ready let’s dive in I
have my outline done for my octopus I use transfer paper to transfer my
drawing onto the canvas I use canson canva art boards there are 8 by 10
inches and are rigid they’re smooth for fine detail it is important to get
smooth canvas when doing tiny details it also allows the paint to run smoothly I
use liquitex basics acrylic paint it is important to get nice materials when
doing art luckily these paints are high quality and not expensive I start my
painting by laying down a dark blue in the background once that is done I move
on to a medium purple glaze over the whole octopus shape I want to still be
able to see the lines underneath the paint I then place the same dark blue as the
background to block in my shadows I then use black to make the shadows deeper you
will see me go over this layer in the future when I do art I like playing
around with how I do it this means I go over places that I don’t like the fairly
often (heh) it means that I’m also not afraid to make mistakes I use a
light purple glaze to build the shape of the octopus I go over everything here if
you don’t let the layer with glazing medium dry it will pull up as soon as
you apply a new layer of paint octopuses have fun textures to them these textures
are faint and always changing I use colors that are brighter or darker than
my reference photo in the first layers the process of glazing can soften paint
or the brightness of the paint it is tricky to know how to layer underneath
will react to the glaze but the more you do it the easier it will become to
predict the outcome I use a liner brush with dark purple to lay in the darkest
parts of the textured skin this process looks funny when it’s sharp and in focus
but it will become less dominant with the glaze I go in with light purple to
add highlights and details that stick out
these are not my final highlights I leave the brightest whites for my final
highlights this is just to get texture and show me the location of the suckers
I move on to bright orange and Red’s I like working in similar colors at the
same time it keeps my brain organized the bright orange and Red’s are where
light is filtering through the skin of the octopus these places are on the
suckers and near the opening near the mantle these layers are thinned down
with water or glazing medium although they are extremely bright now I will
allow detail to show through the paint this gives my paintings a glow that
really can’t be appreciated until you see them in person
now that the shape and textures of the octopus are coming closer to the end I
go back over the darkest spots in black and get the darkest shadows this is
where the last layer of glaze gets cool I use a thin layer of purple to blend
everything together I work to progressively darker and darker purple
to push in the shadows it leaves all of the detail visible but just makes it
darker this is where it really starts looking like a real octopus once this
layer is dry I go over the highlights that are on the top of the surfaces
I use a purple mixed with mostly white to add details to the suckers and
highlight the ridges this last step makes everything pop just make sure that
you’re careful and you don’t overdo your whites once this whole piece is dry I go
over the skin of the octopus with glass bead gel this is a scary part further of
the process the glass bead gel is not translucent when you apply it this helps
you to know where it has been applied this means that it covers up every
detail that you have just laid down it is thick and contains tiny glass beads
in it you can make more textures with this medium than what you can do with
paint the magic happens when it is dry the glass bead gel becomes clear when
dry and reveals the painting underneath it also plays with light so it takes the
light and the colors that are around it and incorporates it into the painting
this gives the illusion that the octopus is trying to blend into its surroundings
